The recent study published in Nature by Anna Dowbaj together with a team of senior author Meritxell Huch (Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden), conducted at MPI-CBG, provides compelling evidence that integration of several critical liver cell types can be achieved to construct a functional replica of the liver. Prof. Dowbaj has recently joined the TUM and COS and will continue to expand on this groundbreaking work to establish human liver organoids that can be used for drug screening and will provide novel insights into liver function and disease. Her efforts seamlessly integrate with the existing activities at the Center focused on exploring human organoid technologies as a means to develop novel therapies.
